Penn State’s Forum on Black Affairs Presents Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Celebration

The annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Celebration, hosted by Penn State’s Forum on Black Affairs, will be held virtually on Friday, Jan. 15, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., via Zoom.
Traditionally, FOBA brings together thousands of Penn State community members to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Join us for the first event of two weeks of programming to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.! Watch videos of current Penn State Brandywine and Abington student leaders reflecting on the significance of inaugurating Kamala Harris as the first female, African-American & South-Asian vice-president and on how Dr. King’s words apply to our current struggles with systemic racism. Then, we’ll take up the discussion together.

Movie Night: Selma

Grab some snacks, cozy up under a blanket, and watch the 2014 historical drama “Selma,” directed by Ava DuVernay and written by Paul Webb. The film is based on the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches initiated and directed by James Bevel and led by Martin Luther King Jr., Hosea Williams, and John Lewis.

Penn State Abington MLK Legacy Virtual Experience

At our annual event we celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the legacy he left to inspire us all especially in times like these. Our Drum Major of Justice award will be given to individuals who embody the spirit of MLK in their everyday lives. In lieu of our in-person brunch, participants will witness an encouraging visual presentation that can hopefully be a reminder to us all to keep the MLK spirit in all we do.

Living Room Conversation: Race in the Time of COVID-19

Vippy Yee, the Rosenberg Director of the Penn State Brandywine Center for Ethics & Civic Engagement, will lead this discussion using a Living Room Conversation model developed by dialogue experts to facilitate connection between people despite their differences, and even identify areas of common ground and shared understanding.

Grab some snacks, cozy up under a blanket, and watch “Just Mercy,” a 2019 American biographical legal drama film co-written and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. The film is based on the real-life work of civil rights attorney Bryan Stevenson (played by Michael B. Jordan), who fights tirelessly to overturn the conviction of Walter McMillian (played by Jamie Foxx), a man sentenced to die in 1987 for the murder of an 18-year-old girl despite evidence proving his innocence.
